The extensive remains of West Lethans Pit No.1 lie to the N of the dismantled railway that runs, round the N flank of Knock Hill and were depicted as roofed on the 1915 revision of the 2nd edition of the OS 25-inch map (Fifeshire, 1915, sheet xxxiii.3). The best preserved of the structures is the brick-built fan extraction housing which still stands some 6m in height; it measures 8.8m from E-W by 5.1m transversely overall, with the fan housing about 5.5m in diameter. The structure is built entirely of Lochside bricks and appears set at the top of one of the shafts. Five machinery plinths, four of brick and one of concrete are situated immediately to the W of the fan house (all still retain their metal fixing bolts), while other ancillary buildings and plinths lie farther to the W.
The half-demolished spoil tip for the colliery lies to the N.
