Activities

Field Visit (24 October 1991)

NT09SW 44 0336 9460

A ruined cottage situated at the confluence of two burns some 200m to the N of the Black Devon Burn. It is depicted as roofed on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Fife & Kinross, 1856, sheet xxix) and annotated 'The Nunnery'. Examination of the fabric of the building reveals at least three phases of construction and suggests that it was raised and extended during the 19th century. The origin of the place-name is unknown, but the ONB states that 'it is supposed by some to have been a retreat for Nuns at the time of the Reformation'.
