SHIELDHALL

The early 18th-century house at Shieldhall belonged to Alexander Oswald. The Shieldhall estate was sold to Robert Cassels for housing about the time Stephen's shipyard arrived in 1869. Peter Paterson's 18th-century Merryflats estate, to the south of Linthouse, became the site for Govan Poorhouse, built in 1872. Becoming also a hospital and asylum for the combined parishes of Govan and Gorbals, until 1930, it is now part of the Southern General Hospital. Much of the Shieldhall estate was purchased by the Scottish Wholesale Co-operative Society in 1881 for an industrial estate. The Cabinet Works were the first to be built in 1884 and more were being built up to 1930. After Cassels' misfortune, the Trustee for his creditors sold a site in 1913 to John Woyka & Co. Ltd for a timberyard and in 1927 they laid out streets and sewers for housing. About that time Fairfield's built a Clubhouse and Sports Pavilions at Shieldhall. King George V Dock was opened in 1931.
