The royal burgh of Auchterarder is first documented in 1246. It was clearly a place of some importance in medieval Scotland, but it declined in the 16th century. In 1584 it was, in all probability, represented in Parliament for the first and only time. It is doubtful whether the town had any burghal status after this time, though the burgesses of Perth regarded it as a burgh of barony in 1692.
Created a police burgh in 1894, Auchterarder was reinstated on the roll of the Convention of Royal Burghs in 1951.
