An 'Old Coal Pit' is depicted on the 1st edition of the 6-inch map (Linlithgowshire, 1856, sheet 5) some 100m NW of Hildertsonhills (Cottages).

"N of Hilderstone Quarry is a coal pit 58 fathoms in depth and communicate with a level by a tunneled roadway at the base of the hill. Although the pit has not been worked for some time owing to some misunderstanding between the proprietors, there is still abundance of coal to be obtained from it."
