OS 6-inch map, 1959.
A lead mine was worked about the end of the 18th century at Hangingmyre, and silver extracted from the ore, the galena also containing silver.
It was worked c. 1780 at the expense of the proprietor, Mr Stewart of East Conland, undere the management of an Englishman called Williamson. The water mine which drained it is still visible, and the traces of the workings are observable, partly obliquely by the end and in front of the farmhouse of Hangingmyre. A considerable quantity of metal was melted at temporary works erected on the spot, and its silver is said to have been extracted. At length under pretence that it would be more profitable to take the ore to England, about 6 tons were sent to Perth for shipment, and Williamson absconded with the ore, leaving his employer to continue operations. Thus, the ore has never been properly searched for or worked. (Innes quotes G Buist, writing c.1825.)
