Archaeology Notes

ND05NE 31 0803 5665.

Hut Circle, Torr nan Dearcag (actually Torr na Cubhaige): On the top of a green hillock about 1 mile NNE of Dorrery Lodge, are the remains of what has probably been a small hut circle, overall diameter 21ft.

RCAHMS 1911, visited 1910.

ND 0803 5665. The location of this feature is as given above. On top of the hillock are the mutilated remains of a stony mound about 7.7m in diameter. The centre of the mound has been hollowed out to a diameter of some 3.0m. On the NW edge of this hollow is a large slab set on edge.

It measures 0.9m long by 0.5m high and oriented NW-SE. This would appear to be the remains of a small cairn rather than a hut circle, as stated by the RCAHMS.

Visited by OS (W D J) 14 April 1962.

(ND 0803 5665) Torr na Cubhaige (NAT) Cairn (NR)

OS 6" map, (1963)

Torr an Cubhaige is a turf-covered cairn as described by previous OS field surveyor; the upright slab in the centre is probably the side of a short cist.

Visited by OS (N K B) 16 September 1981.
