Archaeology Notes

NM65NW 13 6432 5684

Shielings, 650' - 750' OD. Circular structures and walled gulleys, etc in the crags SE of Am Biod and on the slopes immediately below.

P Gaskell 1968.

Three possible huts, a small pen or enclosure and an extensive area of cultivation remains, on a broad plateau below Am Biod and between it and the March Dyke to the E, were recorded during a pre-afforestation survey on the Rahoy Estate.

The NW hut, at NM 6421 5695, is circular and measures up to 4m in diameter within a 0.9m wide boulder wall standing up to 0.7m in height. An oval structure, measuring 3m to 4m across internally, and with an entrance on the S, lies about 25m to the SE.

At the E edge of the plateau overlooking the burn, at NM 6432 5684, there are the low remains of a subrectangular turf-built structure, measuring 4.5m by 3m overall and with a 0.2m deep sunken interior. At NM 6435 5671, there is a small enclosure, or pen, measuring 2m by 4m lies to the S of the dam depicted on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1974).

Areas of rig, averaging 3m in width, lie on either side of the possible huts. That on the SW is oriented from NW to SE whilst the rig on the N is aligned from N to S. This area is contained on the N by a turf-covered dyke which continues part the way up Am Biod.
