Accessing Scotland's Past Project

Sydenham House was first built in the eighteenth century as the dower house for the nearby mansion of Hendersyde House. It has been added to over the centuries, with significant additions being made in the Victorian period.

In the late eighteenth century the house was bought and extended by Admiral Dixon, who had served as Admiral Nelson's commanding officer. Dixon named Sydenham House after the area of London in which he had been brought up. During this period, a large additional wing, which included battlements reminiscent of a medieval castle, almost doubled the house in size.
