Archaeology Notes

ND04SW 3 029 439.

A: ND 0298 4396. Situated on gently sloping ground mid- way between two streams is a circular enclosure, consisting of a turf bank 14m in diameter and 0.3m maximum height, with an entrance on the SW.

B: ND 0295 4394. 36m SW of 'A' is a second enclosure, 8m in diameter and 0.4m maximum height. There is no apparent entrance in the turf bank.

C: ND 0295 4397. Some 36m N of 'B' is a possible hut circle, 3m in diameter and 0.2m high. It lies on a grass mound, 7m in diameter and 0.4m high.

D: ND 0293 4397. 25m WSW of 'C' are the foundations of a building, measuring 10 by 2m and 0.1m high.

The four published features are two old sheepfolds (A, B) and two shielings (C, D); the footings of four further shielings are newly located to the SW. The shieling footings range in size from 5.0m in diameter to 8.0 by 3.0m across. The old sheepfolds are generally as described in the previous field report.
