Thainstone House, from 18th century. To a straightforward, two-storey-and-attic granite property, Archibald Simpson added, 1840, an imposing six-window, single-storey (tall) and sub-basement rectangle with a two-storey-and-basement
tower (cf Haddo, Forgue, qv) and a pedimented 'porte-cochère' with three soaring, round-headed arches, all harled with dressings and with his characteristic oversailing eaves. An exotic Italian flower further embellished by bold
plasterwork panels within. Hotel extension, 1992, by William Lippe, although large, carefully respects style and pre-eminence of Simpson's main house. Home of Sir Andrew Mitchell, ambassador to the Court of Prussia in the time of Frederick the Great.
