INSCH. A burgh of barony lying within a 'diversity of hill and dale'. Very much a local centre; in the 19th century it had monthly cattle fairs, and hiring fairs every May and November. The street pattern is almost random. Principally Insch is
endowed with a delightful series of good, late 19th-century cottages, most single-storey-andattic with consoled doorpieces, hood-moulds to windows, skewputs, canted dormers and ridge tiles - often excellently done.
