Newbattle or Easthouses and Westhouses was erected a burgh of barony in 1634.

A village comprising three unroofed buildings annotated Ruins, one of which has two compartments, one partially roofed buildings and thirteen roofed buildings, including a Church (NT36NW 117) and a Manse, is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Edinburghshire 1854, sheet 7). The larger modern village of Newbattle is shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1978).
