Field Visit (29 November 1991 - 12 March 1992)
NX88NW 85 826 875.
There are four burnt mounds situated beside a burn to the S and SSE of Torr Wood. Lifting sods on the mounds revealed cracked stone set in a matrix of black soil.
NX 8262 8750. This bipartite mound is situated within a boggy sump on the SE side of the burn and measures 26m from NE to SW by 12m transversely and up to 0.9m in height. The SW portion of the mound appears to overlie that to the NE. There are four hollows in the mound on the W, N and NNE, opening out on to the burn, which may represent the locations of troughs. There is a fifth hollow in the body of the mound which may have opened out on the SSE. To the E of the main mound there is a second kidney-shaped mound measuring 8m from NNW to SSE by 6m transversely and up to 0.3m in height, opening on the ENE.
