Archaeology Notes

NJ36SW 30 3025 6075

Kenneth's Mount: A small mound on which Kennth Leal was hung in chains in 1792 for robbing the Elgin-Fochabers mail.

OS Name Book.

His body was buried, along with the chains, at the foot of the gallows.

J Morrison 1873.

This natural stony rise at NJ 3025 6075 is now known as Kennieshillock, according to Mr Ronald Milne of Kennieshillock Farm. He also states that his grandfather, now deceased, ploughed it but saw nothing unusual. A concrete water reservoir now occupies the summit.

An overgrown track centred at NJ 3006 6167 is known locally as part of the old Fochabers to Elgin road and is reputed to be the site of the robbery.

Visited by OS (ISS) 19 January 1972.
