Archaeology Notes

NS70NE 36 78 09

The only reference to the burgh of Sanquhar is to be found in the account of the English Sheriff of Dumfries for the year from October 1335, where there is mention of five burgages, described as 'waste'. It was erected a burgh of barony in 1484 and became a royal burgh in 1598.
