Depicted on the 1st edition of the O.S. 6-inch map (Roxburghshire, 1862-3, sheet XVI). The Ordnance Survey Name Book (ONB) mentions that Essex Mains is 'An uninhabited house on the farm of Cessford; it was originally a farm house with a farm attached, but at present forms part of Cessford Farm.'
