1991 excavation by SUAT Ltd., on vacant ground to rear of 15 and 17 Castle Street. Trenches sited at NX 6831 5097 and 6833 5097.
Information from D Bowler (Deputy Director, SUAT) January 1992.
Two trial trenches were excavated by machine in land to the rear of Castle Street/St Cuthbert Street properties and revealed black garden soil c0.40m thick containing 19th century pottery sherds, over an orange silty clay. A trench close to the supposed town defences revealed a backfilled cut for a modern service trench and possibly an earlier, sloping cut. Re-deposited clay contained two medieval pottery sherds. The town defences were not positively identified but are possibly represented by the sloping cut.
Sponsors: SUAT, HS, Stewartry District Council.
