The modern A939 public road, which runs alongside the River Gairn for a short distance south-west of Gairnshiel Lodge, follows the route of an eighteenth-century military road that led from Coupar Angus to Fort George.
The programme of military road-building undertaken in highland Scotland improved communication between places of strategic importance, helping the government to secure control of the area.
