Archaeology Notes

NO12NW 9.07 11154 26648

The gateway on the N drive to Scone Palace probably dates from about 1624, although it may be of later date. It is flanked by semicircular towers and bears the arms of King James and Lord Stormont. According to Skene (1870), the adjoining walls are built on the foundations of the abbey precinct wall, but the visible masonry is probably of 19th century date, although it incorporates a number of fictive gunloops, together with stonework and mouldings taken from the abbey.

Visited by RCAHMS (IMS) March 1990.
