A section was cut in the grounds of Fallside House about 50 yds W of the boundary wall: '15 inches below the surface a rough cobbled road was encountered about 14 ft wide. The surface was very uneven and no large kerbstones or paving slabs were disclosed. The ground covering the roadway was very hard and it was evident that it had not been disturbed for a very long period.'
