Project (March 2013 - September 2013)
A project to characterise the quantity and quality of the Scottish resource of known surviving remains of the First World War. Carried out in partnership between Historic Scotland and RCAHMS.
Note (12 November 2013)
The tower was probably a signal station, with the base of a large mast located to the immediate S of the tower comprising five concrete slabs. A large concrete slab to the SE of the tower may be a water catchment system for collection of rainwater. The building is of harled concrete block construction, with smooth-finished blockwork on the quoin stones, lintels and jambs of window and door apertures. The tower is of 2 floors with a flat roof, provided with a parapet for use as an observation platform. A lean to structure lay on the N side of the tower. Historic Scotland note in the listing description that a underground shelter accessed by a trapdoor also exists. A water pump, possibly used in connection with the water catchment area is also noted.
