Archaeology Notes

NR78NE 14 c. 779 894

For nearby crannog, see NR78NE 8.

In 1887 underwater investigation revealed a paddle under about 6' (1.8m) depth of mud to the E of the crannog (NR78NE 8) in the SE corner of Loch Coille-Bharr (or Kielziebar) which is situated in the craggy land of Knapdale at an altitude of about 35m OD.

The paddle (which has apparently been lost) was of 'oak' and was 'elegantly made, like a barbed arrow'. It was described as concave on one side but convex on the other. The point of the blade was missing and the handle, which was about 4' (1.2m) long, became detached and was lost soon after its discovery.

The blade measured 8?" (216mm) in length, 8" (203mm) in greatest width, 2" (51mm) in width 'at the point' and 2" (51mm) in thickness, as discovered. The surviving portion of the handle measured 2" (51mm) in diameter and in it there were two blind holes measuring 2" (51mm) in diameter and set 3" (76mm) apart 'as if pegs had been inserted'.
