NT15SE 40.02 NT 1534 5486 Roman Road; quarry-pits
At Fairslacks farm the Roman road is carried across a gully on a causeway NW of the reservoir. A little ahead the road changes direction by some 15 degrees to the E and descends towards Carlops taking advantage of the gentle slope along the crest of the ridge. N of the gully the causeway is well preserved for 200 yds where it crosses unploughed moorland, but it is lost through the old enclosures N of Waterloo (NT 152 547), and it does not reappear till NT 156 551.
J K St Joseph 1952; I D Margary 1957.
The course attributed to the Roman road is no doubt approximately correct but the visible remains of roads between Waterloo and Carlops (NT 160 559) lack any specifically Roman characteristics and could all be of medieval or later date.
