Archaeology Notes

NT04NE 55 0925 4500 to 0999 4608 RR 1.

Formerly RR 7g.

There are traces of the mound of the road in the wood by Townhead farm (NT 093 450) and a cambered mound appears on the same line across boggy ground in a field to the N (NT 095 454). Although there are no further traces, this line joins the modern road at NT 0984 4589.

NT 0928 4503 - NT 0932 4510 Nothing seen in wood, but there is a rise in the fence at NT 0932 4510.

NT 0932 4510 - NT 0984 4589 No trace.

NT 0984 4589 - NT 0999 4608 Modern road probably on line. Gully in wood.

Visited by OS (DWR) September 1972.

Aerial Photographs (RCAHMSAP 1992) reveal a line of quarry pits SE of the modern road near Millburn Cottage at NT 098 455.
