Archaeology Notes

NT76SW 13 7290 6023

Copper workings referred to in the Statistical Account (OSA 1791), and the New Statistical Account (NSA 1845). Driven in to the bank which runs NE-SW by the road below Ellem church (NT76SW 4) is a small adit, mentioned in 1910 (Hist Berwickshire Natur Club) and 1921 (G V Wilson), struck in connection with copper extraction. It is presently blocked by a sheet of corrugated iron and tumbled earth and vegetation.

A swelling in the scarp below the road, opposite the adit, may indicate the site of a spoil tip.

A second adit referred to in Wilson could not be located.

Information from K McLaren and D R Easton, visited 22 March 1992.

(Location cited as NT 729 601) Ellemford Mines: Copper mine 'a short level may be found beside a minor road'. No further information.
