Field Visit (16 November 1990)

NG24NE 12 2795 4997

A group of six shieling-mounds is located on either side of an un-named burn, which drains from the W slope of Ben Horneval. Two occupy the terrace to the SW of the burn and four the level ground to the NE of the burn. Three of the main group are extremely large conjoined mounds, 8.7m, 15m and 18m respectively from E to W by 7.5m, 8m, and 9m transversely and between 1m and 1.5m in height. Two have dimples in the top, but top of the more northerly mound is surmounted by a stone-walled cell, 1.8m by 1.4m internally, the entrance of which is protected by an arc of a bank. The remainder are smaller in size up to 7.8m in length by 6.5m in breadth and standing to 0.6m in height, only one having any vestigial remains of a stone structure.
