Archaeology Notes

NO60NW 20 61538 07835

(Name: NO 6155 0780) Nunnery (NR) (remains of)

OS 6" map (1938)

'...a nunnery is said to have existed near the Nethergate Port, of which only an entrance now remains; but at this entrance, human bones were found, when the street was levelled a few years ago'.

NSA 1845.

This nunnery is apocryphal. Its supposed existence is due to a misinterpretation of the fact that the nunnery of Haddington held the parish church and certain properties at Crail.

D E Easson 1957

At NO 6152 0781 there is the gable end of a building of considerable age (possibly to which the OS map refers) and the old wall fronting the Nethergate shows at least one blocked-up doorway.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 28 August 1968
