POSSIL

Industry on the lands of Possil was encouraged by the Canal, which had reached Hamiltonhill in 1777. Lower Possil estate and mansion were acquired by Walter Macfarlane before 1878, when his relocated Saracen Foundry was already in business. There he laid out a splendid suburb, where Lindsay & Benzie built many tenements before moving across to Hillhead and the West End. The City's new Housing Department built hundreds more dwellings during the 1920s.
