Field Visit (4 July 1991)
NJ04NW 39 0260 4573.
There are at least five, and possibly seven, buildings to the E of the currently roofed buildings at Bantrach, defined by low grass-grown footings. Four are shown fully or partially roofed on the first edition of the OS 6-inch map (Elginshire, 1874, Sheet xx). What may be a kiln is backed into a slight knoll to the E of the buildings. Two buildings are shown at this location on a survey of 1781 of part of the estate of Dunphail by Hugh Kinnaird (SRO, RHP 14308).
Visited by RCAHMS (DCC) 4 July 1991.
Note (12 March 1997)
A township, comprising three roofed, two partially roofed buildings, one unroofed building and three enclosures is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Elginshire 1874, sheet xx). Two roofed buildings, one of which is arranged around a courtyard, are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1976).
