Archaeology Notes

HU34NE 6 3947 4693.

(Area: HU 395 469) An underground passage and chamber were accidently discovered when the foundations of the dwelling-house at Hogaland were laid.

'The yard immediately to the north of the house is apparently the site of an early structure possibly a broch, but no structural evidence is at present exposed, and the nature of the building cannot be affirmed with certainty. In the possession of the occupant of the building are a number of hammer-stones and rude stone implements, and also some pottery fragments, all said to have been recovered in setting back the wall of the yard at the time when the house was built.

RCAHMS 1946, visited 1930

An ideal situation for a broch, but no trace. The present occupant of Hogaland,at HU 3947 4694, believes there to be underground passages beneath the house, but has no further knowledge, and knows nothing of the present whereabouts of the finds.
