Activities

Field Visit (10 December 1992)

Air photography has recorded the cropmarks of a cemetery comprising at least two round and up to six square barrows on near-level ground 270m NE of Sheriffton farmhouse.

The round barrows lie to the E of the square barrows and, within their ditches, measure about 6m and 8m in diameter respectively; an elongated mark extends across the ditch from the centre of the more southerly towards the NW, and a similar feature can be seen in the best-defined of the square barrows.

These latter are disposed in a conjoined row of three, a conjoined pair and a possible singleton. The row of three is aligned approximately E-W; each measures about 4m across and contains a central pit within its ditch. To the S, the conjoined pair lie on roughly the same axis and include the best-defined example in the cemetery. This measures about 7m across within its ditch, and is considerably larger than its incomplete neighbour on the E. The possible singleton to the SW is featureless.

Information from RCAHMS (JRS), 10 December 1992.
