Archaeology Notes

NO24NE 68 From c.2831 4500 to 2970 4650

NO c.2831 4500 to NO c.2883 4590 There is no trace on the ground of the road to the Roman fort, Cardean (NO24NE 12) (WDJ).

NO 2895 4607 to NO 2970 4650 The course of the road was plotted from St Joseph aerial photographs and ground control. There are no visible traces on the ground. Surveyed at 1:2500 (WDJ).

Visited by OS (WDJ) April 1969; January 1970.

NO 2893 4606 to NO 2944 4634 This section of road is probably not Roman in origin.

Inf: G Maxwell May 1990

NO 2893 4606 to NO 2944 4634 The speculated Roman road as drawn on the current edition of the (NMRS record map) OS 1:10,000 map (1977) can be observed in aerial photographs (RCAHMSAP 1976, 1977, 1982, 1988, 1989, 1990,1993, 1994) as overlaying Cardean Roman Fort (NO24NE 12). Also, this road does not coincide with the presumed road contemporary with Cardean fort leading out of a gateway.

Information from RCAHMS (SDW) 14 March 2003.
