(Centre: NY 51519655) FORT (NR)

OS 6" map (1923)

Enclosures, Ninestone Rig. In rough pasture on the S flank of Ninestone Rig, half a mile SSW of the Stone Circle (RCAHMS 1956 No. 113) and at a height of 750 ft. OD, there are two continguous oval enclosures lying on a N-S axis. The walls of both are of boulder-faced rubble, but are reduced to mounds no more than 2 ft. high and spread to an average thickness of 8 ft. The N enclosure, measuring 145 ft. from N to S by 120 ft. from E to W, has two entrances roughly in the centres of the E and

W sides; while the S enclosure, which lies at a slightly lower elevation, measures 117 ft. from N to S by 103 ft. from E to W and has one entrance in the centre of the E side and another at the point of junction with the N enclosures on the NNW. Neither enclosure contains any sign of structures, although the interior of the S one has been slightly hollowed out below the natural surface-level. Both are probably stock pens.
