Activities

Project (1 November 2019 - 30 November 2019)

A historic environment assessment was required by Tilhill Forestry to inform a proposed planting scheme at Cleuchfoot Farm, near Langholm, Dumfries and Galloway. A desk-based assessment and walkover survey was designed to establish a sound baseline on the historic environment within the landholding

This process identified 11 Historic Environment Sites (Table 1). Nine were located within the assessment area, including a previously-undiscovered outlying element of a site characterized in Portwood 2017, where it is depicted as lying immediately adjacent to what is now the northeast boundary of the extension area. A further two sites were located immediately adjacent to the assessment area, and thus had the potential for any buffers imposed to encroach within the assessment area.

Field Walking (7 October 2019 - 11 November 2019)

A possible enclosure of uncertain date was captured on three images during an oblique aerial survey carried out in 1980. The enclosure is not depicted on historical or modern mapping but is visible on oblique aerial photography as a possible twin banked enclosure. The banks are visible at the south side, but become difficult to distinguish in other areas.

The site was not located during field survey in an area heavily overgrown with rough pasture.
