(NY 3289 8192) Earthwork (NR)

OS 6" map (1957)

Slight twin banks with a medial ditch, 2ft wide and 3ft 6ins deep, form a horse-shoe shaped fort (RCAHMS 1920, visited 1912) (shown on Jobey's map as a 'Scooped enclosure') at the NE end of Black Bull Bank, measuring 169ft by 119ft. There appears to have been a wall along the edge of the inner bank, and traces of stonework are visible at its NW angle.

G Jobey 1971

NY 3288 8191. A settlement situated on level moorland at 149m OD incorporates a steep, natural slope as part of its defence. The D-shaped enclosure comprises an inner bank 0.5m high internally and 1.0m high externally with, in the N, and W, a 1.0m deep medial ditch and corresponding outer bank; and in the E and S, simply a 0.6m deep ditch. The entrance, in the NW, is a 3.0m wide gap between the end of the banks and the steep, river-cut slope. The level interior is covered by thick moorland grass and measures up to 47.0m by 34.0m; there are no obvious traces of stances. A number of earthfast boulders protrude from the banks and there is a narrow stony spread on top of the inner bank on the NW side.

Surveyed at 1:10,000.

Activities

Field Visit (February 1981)

Brock Linns, Bloch NY 328 819 NY38SW 2

This enclosure is situated 600m N of Bloch farmhouse; the interior measures 50m by 33m and is enclosed by a bank with an external ditch on all sides except the SW, where the ground falls away steeply. Both the bank and the ditch increase in size from the SE round to the NE and NW, where they are accompanied by an outer bank. There is a possible entrance on the WNW.

Project (29 May 2014)

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by CFA Archaeology Ltd, a desk based assessment and walk over survey (May 29th 2014) was conducted

The historic environment record within the Site Boundary is relatively limited, although there is some potential for the proposed development site to contain previously unknown heritage assets from at least the later prehistoric period onwards, given the historic landscape character of the wider area. Taking this into account, the archaeological potential of the proposed development site is considered to be low.

A summary assessment, on a site by site basis, of the predicted effects on the settings of assets within a 10km radius where the blade tip ZTV indicates that there would be theoretical views of one or more turbines
