(NY 3656 8438) Tower (NR) (Remains of)

OS 25" map (1857)

This name applies to the gable end of the Buccleuch Arms Hotel. It is said to have been a tower or peel belonging to the Armstrongs (Name Book 1857). The chief feature of interest is the projecting wing at the SW angle, which contains a vaulted basement, measuring 14ft 5ins by 12ft 5ins within 2ft 9ins thick walls. The main part of the building seems relatively modern, but the SW wing may date from the beginning of the 18th century.

RCAHMS 1920, visited 1912

NY 3656 8437. The gable end of the building was demolished when the hotel became a private house in 1947 (Town Clerk, Town Hall, Langholm). The SW wing has been cement-rendered and has no outstanding external features. The vaulted basement is as described.

Visited by OS (MJF) 22 September 1979.
