Field Visit (March 1981)

White Cleuch NY 308 862 NY38NW

On the SE side of White Cleuch at its junction with the Logan Water there is a platform building (6.5m by 2.8m internally) adjoined on the SE by a slightly scooped yard 12m by 6m internally). To the SE there are two oval enclosures (19m by 17m and 10.7m across respectively within stony banks) and what may be a second building (7.8m by 2.9m internally). The site has been partly ploughed and planted with trees.

Project (29 May 2014)

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by CFA Archaeology Ltd, a desk based assessment and walk over survey (May 29th 2014) was conducted

The historic environment record within the Site Boundary is relatively limited, although there is some potential for the proposed development site to contain previously unknown heritage assets from at least the later prehistoric period onwards, given the historic landscape character of the wider area. Taking this into account, the archaeological potential of the proposed development site is considered to be low.

A summary assessment, on a site by site basis, of the predicted effects on the settings of assets within a 10km radius where the blade tip ZTV indicates that there would be theoretical views of one or more turbines

Field Visit (15 February 2021)

A field visit was carried out by Mott Macdonald on the 15th of February 2021 in advance of felling works at Loganhead Forest. The survey was specifically targeting the previously recorded township by the RCAHMS in 1981.

Limited evidence was discovered. The archaeological report notes that no features were identified, but that a stone built structure was found at NY 30809 86222. This structure appears to match the location of a building depicted on the 2nd edition 6" OS map.

The structure is constructed from small to medium angular slabs, topped by a rough soldier course of medium sized rounded field stones to a full height of c.1.10m (Photo 5.5). It comprises a small compartment, aligned north-west to south-east and measuring 7m by c.2.2m and is open at south-east end. The stub of curving wall abuts the south-west corner of the compartment, gently curving to south-west itself for c.3m.
