Kiln (dis) [NAT] (at NY 3832 7865)
OS 1:10,000 map, 1983.
An old limestone quarry lies immediately to the N of Gilnockie Tower (NY37NE 3), in a field which has been reclaimed as pasture. The quarry face is still exposed along the S side, where it comes close to the N wall of the tower. To the NE, a kiln has been set into the slope of the river bank, and has two splayed openings at its base.
The lime works was in operation by the end of the 18th century, and continued in use throughout the following century, but, by 1900, it had fallen out of use and is noted as such on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Dumfriesshire, sheet liii, 1900).
