Archaeology Notes

NC82SW 9 830 204.

NC 830 204. Achnidale.

W Roy 1747

This is a deserted township situated on the lower slopes of Cnoc Tuarie. It comprises the footings of thirteen rectangular buildings, several kailyards (some attached to the houses), a corn-drying kiln and a system of fields with adjoining stone clearance heaps, all within a ruinous boundary wall. There is a later ruined sheepfold at NC 8322 2048.

The name "Achnidale" or similar is not known to local inhabitants who refer to the area as "Tuarie Green"; however this name refers to the grazing and not to the settlement itself.

The township would have been depopulated at the time of the main Sutherland Clearances between 1800 and 1820.

Visited by OS (N K B) 3 March 1977

A township comprising thirteen unroofed buildings and two enclosures is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Sutherland 1879, sheet lxxvii). Thirteen unroofed buildings, five enclosures and a head-dyke are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10,560 map (1962).
