On Crawthat Hill are the remains of an oval fort, 170ft by 115ft. An earth and stone rampart with indications of stonework on the crest, is scarped to a height of 6ft except on the NE where the defences have disappeared, while there is a further gap of about 70ft towards the south. A large mound in the centre of the fort is natural.

The only feature on Crawthat Hill which roughly corresponds to the RCAHMS description is the sub-oval enclosure at NY 2453 8340. It is situated on a southerly hillslope at 253m OD and is approximately 55.0m by 43.0m with a turf-covered bank up to 0.6m high internally and 1.1m high externally with an outer ditch 0.5m deep.
It forms part of an extensive system of banks on this hillslope all of which are similar in appearance and general proportions. The amorphous mound abuts a rectangular stance which is 10.0m by 8.0m and may be the base of a building. This enclosure is not a fort and it cannot be considered in isolatiom as it is clearly part of the probable post-medieval system of banks and drainage ditches. It appears to be a stock enclosure, perhaps a forerunner of the old drystone walled stockyard to the south at NY 2460 8325.
