(NY 1205 8368) Maxwell's Thorn (NR)

OS 6" map (1957)

Two thorn trees said to have stood near Torwood Ford at the spot where Lord Maxwell was killed after the battle of Dryfesands in 1593, were washed away by flood about 1887. They have been replaced by two others enclosed in a railing.

T Henderson 1930

At the published site there is a single thorn tree (known as Maxwell's Thorn) enclosed by a wooden fence. About 4.0m to the south there is another but it stands in an old hedge line.

Visited by OS (EGC) 15 June 1966.
