Air photography (RCAHMSAP 1984, 1988 and 1989) has recorded the cropmarks of an extensive system of boundary ditches between the public road leading past Hayknowes steading (NY16NE 62) and the River Annan at Newbie. The overall pattern of the boundaries is uncertain, and may well represent several periods of construction, but the various angles in the ditches, and several junctions, indicate that the landscape E and N of Hayknowes has been divided into a series of large enclosures.

One of the most striking elements of the boundary system is a double-ditched droveway, which extends N from Hayknowes for a distance of at least 550m. One of the ditches intersects the perimeter of a rectangular enclosure (NY16NE 124) about 250m NE of Hayknowes; its points of approach midway along the W side, and departure from the NE corner, almost certainly indicate that the enclosure pre-dates the boundary. Another boundary (NY16NE 121) appears to respect the SW angle of the Roman temporary camp NY16NE 22.

Information from RCAHMS (SPH), 20 February 1996.

Listed as ditch-systems and droveway (with NY16NE 120, 121 and 125).

RCAHMS 1997.
