(NY 0385 8333) Fort (NR)
OS 6" map (1948)
Fort...the site of a defensive enclosure on a plateau, recognisable by a low rampart curving across the brow of the hill towards the north, but the oval indicated on the OS map is not traceable in any other artificial work.
RCAHMS 1920, visited 1912
Ramparts barely observable; little more than scarps, but quite authentic. A native fort, certainly not Roman.
Information from O G S Crawford 12 March 1939.
Hill-fort.
R W Feachem 1956
The fort appears to have been enclosed by two ramparts except on the east side where only one line of defence has been considered necessary. The ramparts are best preserved to the south but even there they are reduced to scarps; elsewhere they are barely discernible apart from a short stretch of the outer one on the north side. There are two likely entrances, one from the SW and the other from the SE. The interior rises above the encircling defences and shows no sign of occupation.
Re-surveyed at 1:2500
Visited by OS (EGC) 23 December 1963.
Note (3 April 2017)
This fort, which occupies the summit of White Hill, is oval on plan and its interior measures 110m from N to S by 60m transversely (0.56ha). On the N and S the defences comprise twin ramparts, both of which are reduced to scarps extending round the shoulder of the hill, but only the inner can be traced along the E side, while the W has been severely reduced by cultivation. Oblique aerial photographs taken by RCAHMS confirm the presence of an entrance on the SW, while the OS observed a possible second on the SE. The aerial photographs also reveal the grooves of low cultivation rigs throughout the interior.
