Archaeology Notes

NC81SW 34 centred 835 108

Centred NC 835 108. On a shelf in a generally SW-facing slope is a settlement of three oval stone-walled huts ('A' - 'C') within an associated field system.

'A' is the best-preserved, measuring internally 10.2m NW-SE by 9.0m NE-SW within an unusually narrow wall, 1.1m thick and 0.3m high, broadening to 2.0m at the entrance in the SE are. There is a distinct splay from about 0.8m internally to 1.3m wide externally at the entrance. Occasional inner and outer facing stones are apparent.

'B', of different character to A, measures internally about 6.0m NW-SE by 5.0m NE-SW within a low heather-covered wall spread to 1.5m broad. The entrance is in the SE, but all other details are obscured.

'C' measures internally 9.0m NW-SE by 7.5m NE-SW within a wall 0.5m high spread to 2.5m broad all round. The entrance is in the SE arc.

The well-defined field system, occupying five hectares of open moorland, comprises numerous field plots, average size 40.0m by 30.0m, delineated by stone clearance heaps and lynchets with occasional low heather-covered field walls visible.

Surveyed at 1:10,560.
