Archaeology Notes

NY06NW 10 021 665.

NY 021 666. Rectangular enclosure with entrance on the E, possibly medieval (A E Truckell) or Roman (J K St Joseph 1952). On air photographs, a circular enclosure is visible within, the others lie outside the W side.

No trace of this feature is visible on the ground.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 11 August 1965

This feature is also visible on aerial photographs taken by G D B Jones (listed as Ward Law C - NY 022 666). Copies of these photographs are lodged in Dumfries Museum. He interprets it as a major, univallate, sub-rectangular site, with traces of an internal hut of abnormal size.

Information from G D B Jones letter to G Maxwell, RCAHMS 4 July 1980

B Jones 1979

Iron age (probable).

(Undated) information in NMRS.

(Location cited as NX 022 666). Sub-rectangular univallate site. Some traces of internal circular huts, which seem to be extremely large.

A Truckell 1984.
