OS 6" map (1957)
The RCAHM is no doubt referring to the 'tumulus' at NX 9342 9111 in describing 'an excavated cairn some 20ft in diameter, east of the Drove Road, about 3/4 mile NE of Auchencairn'. Scott-Elliott describes a cairnfield of six cairns, centred NX 933 912. Four are 9ft in diameter while the other two, which have been robbed, are 18ft across. It is said that flints were found here at the beginning of the century.
RCAHMS 1920, visited 1912; J Scott-Elliot and I Rae 1967
Three cairns were identified in this area and it is probable that the others mentioned by Scott-Elliott have been destroyed by forestry operations.
NX 9341 9112: 'A': A cairn 8.5m in diameter and 0.6m high is situated on a small eminence in afforestation. A 1.5m wide trench has been dug into it from the south-west and a large slab which could be part of a cist has been exposed near its centre.
NX 9331 9119: 'B': A cairn situated on the crest of a small scarp in afforestation is 6.5m in diameter and 1.0m high. It has been disturbed on the south side.
NX 9326 9114: 'C': The remains of a cairn on the crest of a slight scarp are visible as a stony mound 5.0m in diameter and 0.5m high. It has been ploughed through and planted with trees.
Surveyed at 1:10 000.
