Archaeology Notes

NX99SW 1 c. 90 92.

(Area: NX 90 92) The original Closeburn Town, where in 1681, Kirkpatrick, the proprietor of the barony, was granted the right to hold fairs and a market, is said by Chalmers to have been "at the church" (NX99SW 22) and this approximates to Watson's siting, about one mile from the present village at the cross-roads, at NX 896 923.

The ruins of "The Vault", an old building which had probably been the tollbooth, and the market cross were all that remained of Closeburn Town in 1806, apart from one or two modern cottages.

G Chalmers 1890; R M F Watson 1901; Scots Mag 1806, Vol.68, 504

Traces of rectangular enclosures show on air photographs (541.A.549.F20 3166-8) W of the church at NX 903 921, and in the vicinity of Closeburn Hall at NX 906 927.

There are no traces of either buildings or enclosures in the areas mentioned.
