NX97SE 17 c. 95 71.
An oak canoe about 14 feet long and 3 feet broad was dug up in Mabie Moss near the Pict's Knowe (NX97SE 13) during drainage operations and is now at Mabie House.
Trans Dumfriesshire Galloway Natur His Antiq Soc 1881
No knowledge of this canoe was found at Mabie House. The present occupiers have been in the house for seven years; previously the house was in the hands of the Forestry Commission for fifteen years. No information obtained at Dumfries Museum.
Visited by OS (WDJ) 6 July 1964.
In 1879 members of the Dumfriesshire and Galloway Natural History and Antiquarian Society inspected a 'fine old canoe' which had earlier been found during the drainage of Mabie Moss, an extensive area of peat-moss which was situated on the W edge of the valley of the lower Nith at an altitude of about 10m OD. This is presumably the 'oak boat' that Coles notes as having been found with 'other lacustrine relics' near the enclosure at Pict's Knowe (NX97SE 13).
The boat measured about 14' (4.3m) in length by 3' (0.9m) transversely and its timber was identified as 'oak'. Plans were made for its preservation but do not appear to have been put into effect. Assuming the full length of the boat to have survived to that date, the slenderness coefficient was 4.7.
