Archaeology Notes

NX96NE 5 unlocated.

Several old swords and portions of armour that had been found in Kirkconnell Moss, are now at Kirkconnell. J M Corrie implies that these above include two bronze swords 15 and 24 ins. long, from Kirkconnell Park, which were found in 1784.

J M Corrie 1930

There is a native British LBA bronze sword, possibly from New Abbey in the Dumfries Museum.

J M Coles 1962

No knowledge of a collection of old swords and armour was found at Kirkconnell. In Dumfries Museum are two bronze swords from New Abbey which, Mr A E Truckell Curator, states are the same two swords

described by Corrie, and one of these (24" long) is that described by Coles.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 9 July 1964.

(Rapier of Keelogue type). According to Dumfries Museum records, this blade was found on the Kirkconnell Estate in Troqueer Parish in the 1770's; according to S. Maxwell it is unprovenanced. Rapier with low, rounded trapezoidal butt having two torn rivet-holes; brown and black water patina with much pitting, gold where worn. Length 38cm, width 5.2cm. Mus. Dumfries (1950.37), formerly in private collection at Kirkconnell House.

C B Burgess and S Gerloff 1981.
